Does it ever drive you nuts that all the coupons that arrive at your door, or are sent in your local newspaper, are for products that no one with allergies would ever eat?
Well, an allergic entrepreneur has started up a website that actually features online coupons targeted at the allergy marketplace! Her name is Kathleen Reale and her new website is called BeFreeForMe.com.
Reale discovered that she was celiac 14 years ago, and it changed her life. Like those of us with allergies, celiacs have to be constantly aware of what they are eating. Celiac disease is a life-long chronic condition where sufferers have a toxic reaction to gluten. Like allergies, celiac disease is an autoimmune process where the body attacks itself and makes itself sick.
While Reale herself is a celiac, her website also caters to the allergic. In fact, you can get coupons and samples of products that are free from gluten, nuts, dairy, soy and fish – some of the top food allergens out there.
This site will also have a variety of information and resources for the allergic, including recipes, articles and product reviews. If you join the site (and membership is free) you will receive a monthly newsletter and a quarterly coupon book. While the site is still getting off the ground, Reale is hoping to have up to 48 product manufacturers, retailers and restaurants in the first 2009 coupon book.
Given that eating non-allergenic can be quite pricey, I think Reale is onto something here. Gluten free food (which I also buy) usually costs double to triple the price of “conventional” equivalents. For instance, I can buy my husband a loaf of good quality whole-wheat bread for about $2.50 in my local supermarket. For a similar loaf of gluten-free bread, I’m looking at about $5.50.
If BeFreeForMe.com can help me get the cost of feeding my family down – even a little bit – I’m all for it.
