As researchers track asthma rates globally, the picture of asthma development for children around the globe is not always the same. For instance, asthma is increasing in areas where the current rates are low, and shows signs of either decreasing or hitting a plateau in areas with high asthma rates.

Interesting things to note:

  1. Atopy (or allergy) has less impact on asthma rates in low and middle income countries
  2. Breastfeeding does provide a protective benefit for children, but only for non-allergic asthma in poorer countries.

These conclusions are based on studies of populations in general. More research is needed to explore these areas.
