OTTAWA – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has released a number of food recall alerts in the past 14 days for a number of products that contain undeclared egg and undeclared milk.

A number of non-dairy creamer products, all imported from Korea, have undeclared milk products in them. Look for the following products and codes:

Dongsuh Frima Coffee Creamer 500 g UPC 8 801037 000559
Dongsuh Frima Coffee Creamer 1 kg UPC 8 801037 000627

Maxim Original Coffee Mix 240 g (12 g x 20) UPC 8 801037 010732
Maxim Decaffeinated Coffee Mix 240 g (12 g x 20) UPC 8 801037 010824

Nescafé Coffee Mix 240 g (12 g x 20) UPC 8 801055 161096

Look for these creamer and coffee products in British Columbia and Alberta. Consumers without milk allergies are not required to return these products as there is no health threat without an allergy. If you are allergic, take your purchase back to the store where you purchased it for a refund.

Our next recall was announced on November 12, 2008. CFIA announced that Lucerne 10% Half and Half Cream has undeclared egg protein in it. This recall is of particular concern as egg allergies can be very severe and cream would not be a logical place for consumers to be cautious. Canadian consumers in the western provinces should look for 1 liter cartons with the Best Before date NO26 and UPC 0 58200 07825 1. This recall only affects British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Consumers without allergies do not have to return the product. Allergic consumers can take the product back to the store at which it was purchased.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for recalls! On November 14, CFIA issued another recall for undeclared milk in 2 GO Brand Beef Tortellini. Look for Fresh 2 Go Beef Tortellini in both the 350 g package and 700 g package. The affected UPC codes are 0 59749 87838 8 and 0 59749 87841 8. Check for these UPC codes, regardless of Best Before date. Consumers in Ontario may have purchased this product at A&P, Dominion, Loeb, Metro, The Barn or Ultra stores.

As of November 17, the recall of non-dairy coffee mixes had been expanded to include a large number of brands and sizes of product from Maxim, Maxwell House and Taster’s Choice.

Consumers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario will need to check their purchases. There have been no reported illnesses yet associated with these items.

Again, allergic consumers are warned that the safest approach to food is to avoid processed items. Cross contamination and labeling errors are a real threat and a common occurrence.
