This is a little-known fact about Type 1 Diabetes: as may as 10 to 20 per cent of sufferers will also have celiac sprue.

The rate of celiac in the rest of the population is a mere 1 per cent.

Why would these two conditions travel together? What we know is that both conditions are autoimmune disorders. This means that the body has turned on itself. In the case of Type 1 Diabetes – also known as Juvenile Diabetes – the pancreas is affected. In the case of celiac disease, the small intestine is affected.

Doctors are now suggesting that anyone who has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes should also be screened for celiac.
