New genetic research shows that there is a relationship between Type 1 diabetes and celiac. Apparently, the same genes that result in other autoimmune diseases (including rheumatoid arthritis) are also linked to celiac.
In celiac, the body’s immune system overreacts to gluten, the protein found in many common grains - including wheat. The immune reaction creates damage in the small intestine, leaving the individual with less ability to absorb nutrients from food.
