New research points to eczema and food allergies, showing that infants with eczema have a higher risk of food-related allergies.

Researchers were “shocked” to find that as many as 1/5 of infants with eczema were already showing signs of peanut allergy! But peanuts were not the only food that infants with eczema had higher allergy risk. According to IgE blood tests, these infants could also develop other allergies.

Of 640 infants with eczema in the study, over 20 per cent already had peanut sensitivities; over 30 per cent had milk sensitivities; over 20 per cent had sesame sensitivity. In fact, infants showed signs of potential allergy at significant percentages for brazil nuts, hazel nuts, cashews and almonds.

Sensitization is a marker for allergic risk.
