HORSHAM, PA –Yet another bread manufacturer is recalling whole wheat bread due to contamination with nuts. This time it’s Arnold Foods Company that is recalling BROWNBERRY brand Whole Grains BREAD 100 % WHOLE WHEAT. (Note that this wording is how the name of the bread appears on the package label.) Apparently, the bread may have undeclared almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts in it.
If you have nut allergies, this is not good news.
The BROWNBERRY brand Whole Grains BREAD 100 % WHOLE WHEAT was sold in the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Consumers need to be aware that this bread was sold both through retail stores and bakery thrift outlets.
If you are wondering if you have this bread at home, check for a green twist tie with a code date of “Oct 11″ printed on the bread bag itself. No other breads under the Arnold brand or the Brownberry brand are being recalled.
The recall was announced after the company received a report from a consumer who actually found nuts in the bread. The consumer realized that nuts are a common allergen, and that the nuts were not listed on the package ingredients. Fortunately, the company has not received any other reports or complaints. In addition, no consumers have reported allergic reactions.
As in the recent Bimbo Bakeries fiasco, if there are no serious reactions to this bread, Arnold Foods has dodged a bullet. The incidence of nut allergies is increasing in general and the chances that someone could be seriously injured from such product mishaps is more and more likely.
Consumers should know that all contaminated stock on store shelves has been removed.
If you have allergies and you’ve purchased this bread, you can return it to the location where you bought it for a full refund. You can also call Arnold Foods directly at 1-800-984-0989.
