Even in a healthy person, very cold air can cause spasms in your airways. These spasms can make it harder to breath.
That same mechanism can cause an asthma attack.
If cold weather does prompt breathing difficulties, get checked out by a health professional. Asthma is often diagnosed for the first time after cold air triggers it.
If you have an inability to catch your breath combined with coughing and wheezing, these symptoms could signal asthma induced by cold weather.
Treatment could include inhalers used before you go out into the cold. However, sometimes it’s as simple as wearing a scarf around your mouth and nose to ensure that the air is warmed before you breathe it in.
