DENVER – Yet another manufacturer is recalling a food product – this time for an undeclared allergen. Bimbo Bakeries USA announced it is recalling Oroweat 100% Whole Wheat Bread due to tree nuts in the bread that are not declared on the label. If you have life-threatening tree nut allergies, you risk a serious reaction.
No offense intended, but perhaps Bimbo Bakeries are living up to their name.
The bread with tree nuts was baked at a Denver plant and distributed to Iowa, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado and New Mexico. Only these states are affected. As a result, consumers in other parts of the US should not worry and will not be included in the recall.
The problematic loaves include ones with red, blue or tan bread tags with a “Best By” date of either 9/22, 9/23 or 9/25. If you have bread that has one of these tags and you are in the 5 affected states, simply take it back to the store where you purchased it for a full refund or exchange of the product.
If you don’t have tree nut allergies, you can choose to consume the bread. It has no harmful or toxic components, unless you have a serious tree nut allergy.
The recall is necessary because of a packaging mix-up. Oroweat Health Nut Bread was inadvertently put in Oroweat 100% Whole Wheat bags. The ingredient information on the Whole Wheat bread does not declare tree nuts. It’s this mix-up that puts the allergic consumer at risk.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of consumers becoming ill to this point. Given that the incidence of tree nut allergy (while generally increasing) is still very low as a percentage of the population, Bimbo Bakeries may have dodged a bullet here. Peanuts and tree nut allergies are still the leading cause of fatal food-related anaphylaxis.
