New research shows what most parents have already suspected: winter weather can increase asthma attacks for kids.
The problem is that the cold air can help to cause inflammation in the airways. As asthma already is a condition of inflammation in the airways, cold means double trouble, making it even more difficult to breathe. Children are often spending time outside too, as part of their school routine, which exposes them to the cold winter air.
Doctors say that prevention is key here: prescription inhalant steroids are the best drug treatment that we have.
Another confounding factor for kids with asthma is winter illnesses, like colds and other viral infections. These can also cause inflammation in the lungs.
